Prior to this appointment, Asafo Agyei was a well-known figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), serving as a dedicated member of its communication team. He had also held the position of Deputy Communication Officer for the NDC in the Asante Region.
Asafo Agyei brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, having earned a Master of Laws (LLM) in National Security Law from the University of Ghana, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), and a Diploma in Community Development from the University of Development Studies, Wa Campus.
Confirming his appointment on his official Facebook page, Asafo Agyei expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Mahama for the trust placed in him. “Thank you His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for the honor and confidence reposed in me. We shall work to make you and the people of Ghana proud,” he wrote, expressing his commitment to serving the country with dedication.
The Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, founded in 1960 as an extra-ministerial body under the Office of the President, is tasked with managing all government scholarships, both locally and abroad. It plays a pivotal role in the country’s Human Resource Development, Employment, and Productivity, aligning its mission with the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda (GSGDA) and Goal 4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Secretariat’s programs focus on providing quality education and fostering human capital development, particularly in areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), where there is an acknowledged gap in the country’s workforce. Asafo Agyei’s leadership will be critical in addressing these issues, ensuring that more students from disadvantaged backgrounds gain access to tertiary education, and contributing to the country’s overall economic and social development.
