The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the Mahama-led administration inherited a massive debt of GH¢12.68 billion at the Ministry of Health from the previous Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, 2025, Mr. Akandoh stated that the debt includes unpaid claims to healthcare providers, arrears owed to donor organizations, and outstanding payments to contractors working across the country.

“When we took office, we inherited a Ministry of Health burdened with a staggering debt of nearly 12.68 billion Ghana cedis; this included unpaid bills to service providers, arrears to donor partners, and outstanding payments to contractors. Despite this, we have not wavered in our commitment to deliver,” the Minister stated.

The Health Minister stressed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government remains focused on restoring trust and efficiency in the health sector.

He highlighted the sector’s vital role in national development, describing it as the backbone of community well-being and economic productivity.

Mr. Akandoh assured the public that despite the fiscal constraints, the Ministry is pursuing reforms aimed at improving service delivery, strengthening public health institutions, and ensuring transparency in resource allocation.

“Ghana’s health sector remains a critical pillar of national development. It underpins healthy communities, drives economic productivity, and helps realise our national vision for a prosperous Ghana.”
