The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has revealed plans to fine traders found operating on pavements and streets within the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra GH₵ 2,000.
This forms part of a renewed effort by the government to decongest the city, enforce municipal bylaws, and enhance sanitation.
The announcement comes in the wake of a major decongestion exercise jointly carried out on Tuesday, May 20, by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly. The operation targeted traders occupying unauthorized spaces in the CBD.
Touring the area during the exercise, Minister Ocloo emphasized the government’s determination to restore order and cleanliness in the capital.
She warned against interference in the clean-up operations, noting that any individuals who attempt to obstruct the process would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“We are going to activate our task force to work 24 hours. They are going to draw a red line on the road, so with this, when you cross the line, you have a fee to pay, which is 1500gh, maximum 2000gh. We are going to make sure that we have leaders in all the markets who will be monitoring, aside from the task force, and make sure that the right things are being done.”
