The National Anti-illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has conducted major operations to disrupt illegal mining activities in Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region, on Monday, November 17, 2025.
Acting on intelligence, the taskforce raided galamsey sites at Anyankyirem, a legally acquired mining concession belonging to Ashanti Gold Corporation.
The site had reportedly been forcibly taken over by illegal miners from Amansie, preventing the company from accessing its lawful concession.
The NAIMOS team also secured other strategic areas around the Obuasi Airport, where illegal mining activities had been reported.
During the raids, several mining equipment, including motorbikes, vehicles and water pumps, were seized. Makeshift structures and other tools used for illegal mining were also destroyed.
Although many illegal miners fled upon the arrival of the task force, one person suspected to be a key organiser of the operations in Obuasi was arrested.
He is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and possible prosecution.
