The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of remarks made by Asante Akim South MP, Kwaku Asante Boateng, over comments perceived as ethnically divisive and contrary to the principles of the party.
In a statement signed by the Caucus Secretary, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the group said it “completely disassociates itself” from the MP’s comments, which suggested that certain people, described as “descendants of slaves,” were not entitled to leadership roles within the NPP.
“These comments are deeply offensive, and run contrary to the spirit of unity, respect, and equality that the NPP stands for. The Ashanti Regional Caucus completely disassociates itself from this narrative and condemns it in no uncertain terms,” the statement read.
The Caucus stressed that the NPP was built on freedom, equality of opportunity, and inclusivity — values that transcend tribe, lineage, or religious background. “Ours is a Party that welcomes and rewards merit, loyalty, and service — not lineage or tribe,” the group reiterated.
The statement described the Ashanti Region as the bedrock of the NPP, rejecting any attempt to use history or ethnicity to divide the party. It urged all members, especially those in leadership, to exercise restraint and decorum in public discourse to preserve unity within the party and the country.
“As a democratic institution, the NPP must uphold that same standard of discipline, mutual respect, and responsibility in speech and conduct,” it said.
The Caucus reaffirmed its commitment to national cohesion and inclusivity, emphasizing that the party’s strength lies in its diversity and collective purpose.
Mr. Kwaku Asante Boateng recently came under public criticism for remarks interpreted as discriminatory against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and others, suggesting that descendants of slaves used in historical Ashanti wars were unfit for leadership.
His comments sparked outrage across social and political circles, prompting the caucus to issue this statement to calm tensions and restore confidence in the party’s values.
