The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that it is fully ready to conduct Tuesday’s by-election in Akwatia, Eastern Region, where 52,328 registered voters across 119 polling stations in 21 electoral areas are expected to cast their ballots.
A total of 484 temporary election officers, including returning officers, presiding officers, verification personnel, technicians, and ballot issuers, have been deployed to ensure the smooth running of the polls.
All election materials, from ballot papers and registers to Biometric Verification Devices, have been received, packaged, and are ready for distribution ahead of the 7 a.m. opening of polling stations.
John Appiah Barfour, Eastern Regional Director of the EC, assured residents that extensive preparations have been made and that political parties have pledged their cooperation to maintain a peaceful election.
“We are ready for tomorrow. All our officers have been trained and we have engaged all political parties. They have pledged their support to ensure a peaceful election,” he said.
Security has been reinforced with police presence and a mobile prison van stationed to address any misconduct on election day, urging voters to turn out in large numbers without fear.
The by-election comes following the passing of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi and will see Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC, and Owusu Patrick of the Liberal People’s Party contesting the seat.
