The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a formal apology to President John Dramani Mahama and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) following death threats circulated by some individuals linked to the opposition party.

During a meeting with the NDC’s national leadership on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah denounced the threats, stressing that the party does not condone such conduct.

“Indeed, there are certain comments that are made by foot soldiers or even people who are not close to the party. But when such unfortunate, condemnable statements are made, it is important for the leadership to distance ourselves and make it clear that this is not the character of our party,” Koduah said.

He acknowledged that divisive remarks have come from both NPP and NDC supporters but insisted that such behaviour undermines democratic principles.

“Some are claiming that the NPP is behind it, and some are even saying they expected other people to die. These things are not healthy for our democracy. Death is something that shouldn’t be wished for your worst enemy. So, if anything came from our side, on behalf of the party, we apologise to the NDC through you to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is not the position of the New Patriotic Party, and we never condone such activity,” he emphasised.

NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah welcomed the apology but raised alarm over the growing hostility among party activists.

“Threats and counter-threats from these young men, we as a party in government will ensure that we nib this in the bud,” Asiedu Nketiah cautioned.

The meeting between the two major political parties followed public outrage after a viral TikTok video captured a man issuing threats against President Mahama and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama.

Police investigations have since led to the arrest of two suspects — Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu — who are currently assisting authorities.

An Accra Circuit Court has granted Ofori bail of GHS100,000 with three sureties, two of whom must be gainfully employed. His passport has also been seized pending trial, with the case adjourned to August 25, 2025.
