2025 WASSCE: Gov’t releases GH¢15.8m for practical exams

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a firm directive to all Heads of Senior High Schools across the country to immediately refund any monies collected from students, parents, or guardians for the 2025 WASSCE practical examinations.

In a letter dated Monday, July 28, 2025, the GES expressed grave concern over reports that some school heads had demanded payment from candidates despite the government’s full absorption of all costs related to the examinations.

“The Heads involved are therefore directed to: Refund any monies collected from students or parents in respect of WASSCE practicals,” the statement noted. GES stressed that such collections were unauthorized and must be reversed without delay.

The directive outlines three specific actions for the affected school heads: First, all monies collected must be refunded in full. Second, the refund process must be well documented, with official receipts issued to confirm repayment.

Third, school heads must notify their respective Regional Directors once the refund process is completed.

GES emphasized that this directive aims to alleviate financial pressure on students and their families, and to ensure that no student is denied the opportunity to participate in the WASSCE practical due to the inability to pay.

The Service also warned that non-compliance would be considered a serious breach of official instructions and could lead to administrative sanctions.

Regional Directors have been tasked with ensuring the directive is communicated to all school heads through their Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Education Directorates.

GES reaffirmed its commitment to equity in education, noting that the government’s intervention was designed to eliminate financial barriers and promote equal access to examination resources.
