Government has declared Friday, July 4, 2025, a public holiday in observance of Republic Day, which falls on Tuesday, July 1.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of the Interior on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
In a statement, the Ministry said, “The general public is hereby informed that Tuesday, 1st July 2025, is Republic Day. However, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601) has declared Friday, 4th July, 2025 as a Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
This follows Parliament’s recent passage of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which introduces key changes to Ghana’s holiday calendar.
The new law, presented by Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak and passed on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, allows public holidays that fall midweek — specifically on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays — to be moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.
Government says the new arrangement is aimed at creating longer weekends to enhance productivity and allow businesses and institutions to plan their operations more effectively.
The decision has been widely welcomed by many workers and private sector organisations, who believe it will reduce disruptions to the work week and improve overall business efficiency.
