The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of 16 individuals in connection with various acts of examination malpractice during the ongoing 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, those arrested include 12 invigilators, one supervisor, and three individuals unaffiliated with the examination process.
In an interview with Citi FM, Mr. Kapi disclosed that two of the unaffiliated individuals were apprehended while attempting to solve questions outside the examination hall and send the answers to candidates.
The third, a woman claiming to be a fashion designer, was caught with photocopied solutions she intended to distribute at an exam centre.
He further explained that some invigilators were caught dictating answers to candidates, while others were found to have taken photographs of question papers and circulated them on social media platforms.
““In some instances, invigilators were dictating answers to candidates in the hall. We have also had cases where invigilators took snapshots of question papers and circulated them on social” Mr. Kapi stated.
This year’s BECE, which commenced on Wednesday, June 11, is expected to conclude on Tuesday, June 17. Over 600,000 candidates are taking part in the nationwide examination.
WAEC has reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination and has warned that it will continue to collaborate with security agencies to clamp down on malpractice.
