The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for a investigation into the medical qualifications of television personality Ann Sansa Daly, whose recent appointment to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Board was revoked.
The revoking of her appointment, just days after it was made, has stirred public debate and professional scrutiny, particularly surrounding claims that Daly lacks the legal authority to practise medicine in Ghana.
Ms. Daly’s televised appearances offering medical advice have further intensified these concerns.
In her place, the President has nominated Professor Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke, currently the Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), according to a statement from the Presidency dated May 23. He is expected to be sworn in soon.
While the official notice did not specify reasons for Daly’s removal, sources close to the matter suggest that sustained pressure from healthcare professionals and civil society forced the administration to act.
The Ministry of Health has since refuted reports that Daly had been officially sworn into the NHIA Board.
Reacting to the controversy, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has written to the Ghana Medical and Dental Council (GMDC), requesting detailed information about Daly’s registration and licensing history.
Dr. Afriyie is seeking answers on whether Daly has ever held a valid medical license in Ghana and if she currently appears on the GMDC’s register.
He also asked whether GMDC regulations permit individuals without medical credentials to publicly present themselves as doctors or offer medical guidance on public platforms.
In addition, he is requesting that the GMDC liaise with its counterpart in the United States to verify whether Daly is recognized or licensed to practise there.
He emphasized that these inquiries are rooted in the public interest, aimed at upholding professional and legal standards in Ghana’s healthcare space.
The Minority has given the GMDC one week to respond formally to their request.
