Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has held discussions with representatives of various trade and business groups to address challenges facing their industries and explore ways to support their growth.
The meeting brought together leaders of the Ghana Artisans Association, hairdressers and beauticians, tailors and dressmakers, barbers, as well as representatives from the construction and building materials industry.
The discussions focused on the concerns of the various groups and measures that could help improve their businesses, expand economic opportunities and create jobs.
Dr Bawumia said the sectors had significant potential for job creation and deserved greater attention and support to enable them to grow.
Among the priority areas identified were improved training and certification, access to credit, the use of solar power and the introduction of a simplified tax system.
He stressed the importance of equipping artisans and other small-business operators with the relevant skills and recognised qualifications to strengthen their competitiveness and improve the quality of their services.
Access to affordable credit was also highlighted as an important factor in helping businesses expand their operations, while solar power could provide an alternative energy source to support their activities.
A simplified tax system, according to the issues raised during the meeting, would also help ease the compliance burden on businesses and support their growth.
The engagement forms part of discussions on how to address the needs of businesses operating in sectors with considerable potential to create employment and support economic activity.
Dr Bawumia expressed appreciation to the representatives for making time to participate in the meeting and share their concerns.
The discussions highlighted the importance of training, financing, reliable energy and a business-friendly tax environment in supporting artisans, service providers and businesses across the construction value chain.
