One person has been arrested in connection with the murder of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) senior lecturer, Prof. Amedeker Mawuadem Korku, who was secretly buried at his residence in Gyahadze, a suburb of Winneba.
Prof. Amedeker had been missing for weeks, prompting growing concern among his family and colleagues. A formal complaint led to a police investigation, which culminated in a grim discovery on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
According to police sources, investigators uncovered the professor’s body buried in a shallow grave within the compound of his own home after finding blood stains inside the residence.
A heap of sand approximately 23 meters away concealed the remains.
The breakthrough came after a report filed by colleagues the day prior led police to the scene. The body was exhumed and sent to a medical facility for autopsy and preservation.
A suspect, identified as Joshua Karry Arthur, was arrested at the deceased’s home in Essuokyir, another suburb of Winneba, currently assisting investigations.
Authorities say several of the late lecturer’s personal belongings were found in the suspect’s possession.
The shocking development has caused fear and unease in the local community and academic circles.
The university is yet to issue an official statement but is reportedly preparing to provide psychological support to affected staff and students.
Police have assured the public of their commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice as the investigation continues.
