The Minister for Transport, Joseph Nikpe, has visited the Railhead Administration in Tema to inspect and observe the test run of two newly acquired locomotives and 20 wagons procured to support the country’s rail freight operations.
The visit formed part of efforts to assess the readiness and operational performance of the equipment ahead of the commencement of rail freight services in Ghana.
During the inspection, engineers conducted a demonstration exercise to test the capacity, efficiency and reliability of the locomotives and wagons under operational conditions.
The Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made towards revitalising the country’s rail transport sector, noting that the introduction of modern freight equipment would significantly improve the movement of goods across the country while reducing pressure on the road network.
The acquisition forms part of government’s broader strategy to modernise Ghana’s railway infrastructure, improve logistics efficiency and support economic growth through an integrated transport system.
Officials indicated that the new locomotives and wagons are expected to play a key role in boosting rail freight services, lowering transportation costs for businesses and enhancing connectivity between key industrial and commercial centres.
The Ministry of Transport says the successful test run marks an important milestone in preparations towards the commencement of rail freight operations in the country.
