A 29-year-old tricycle rider has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after being convicted of defiling a three-year-old girl at Tiegber in the Wa Municipality.
The convict, identified as Naah Mashood, was sentenced by the Wa High Court on October 30, 2026, following a full trial, according to the Upper West Regional Police Command.
The police said the incident occurred on February 23, 2026, after Mashood allegedly lured the child from school to an isolated location.
He was said to have sexually assaulted the girl inside his tricycle, popularly known as a ‘cambuu’.
The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Upper West Regional Police Command arrested him on February 24, 2026, following a complaint lodged by the child’s mother.
After investigations, he was arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court and subsequently stood trial at the Wa High Court, where he was found guilty.
In a statement dated Monday, November 2, the Upper West Regional Police Command commended the officers involved in the investigation and prosecution, as well as others who contributed to securing the conviction.
“The Upper West Regional Police Command commends the officers involved in the investigation and prosecution of the case, as well as all persons who contributed to ensuring that justice was served,” the statement said.
The Command also urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to their children’s safety.
“The Command urges parents and guardians to keep a close eye on their children and ensure their safety at all times,” the police stated.
It further encouraged members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse and defilement to the appropriate authorities.
“Members of the public are also encouraged to report suspected cases of child abuse and defilement to the nearest police station or DOVVSU office for prompt action,” the statement added.
The police assured the public of their commitment to protecting children and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences are brought to justice.
