Tamale Senior High School (TAMASCO) has emerged winner of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Inter-Schools Northern Regional Quiz Competition held on Monday, November 2, 2026.
TAMASCO secured 43 points after four rounds of competition, narrowly beating Tamale Girls Senior High School (PagNaa), which finished as first runner-up with 41 points.
Tolon Senior High School placed third with 39 points.
The participating schools demonstrated their knowledge of the NHIS, answering questions on the scheme’s history, benefit package, members’ rights and responsibilities, and the role of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
The competition also covered the Authority’s digital innovations, including the MyNHIS App, *929#, the One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC), the Free Primary Health Care programme, and channels for resolving legitimate concerns raised by active members at the point of need.
All three schools received cash prizes, certificates of participation and other NHIS souvenirs.
At the opening ceremony, the NHIA Northern Regional Director, Mr. Alhassan Abdulai, welcomed the participating schools, their teachers and officials from the Ghana Education Service (GES).
He encouraged the students to give their best and make their respective schools and the Northern Region proud.
The GES Northern Regional Schools Health Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinator, Hajia Khadija Alhassan, commended the NHIA Executive Management for its health literacy ambassadors initiative.
She described the competition as more than an academic contest, saying it represented a strategic partnership between the health and education sectors.
According to her, engaging students in health insurance education would help develop a generation that understands health financing, social protection and the principle of solidarity, through which collective contributions help protect vulnerable members of society.
She further noted that health education supported the broader educational objective of producing informed and responsible citizens.
“A healthy child learns better, a healthy teacher teaches better, and a healthy nation builds better,” she said, adding that the initiative would help students carry health literacy messages into their homes and communities.
Hajia Khadija also expressed excitement about the strong female participation, noting that most of the competing students were girls drawn from Categories A, B and C schools in the region.
The quiz was moderated by the NHIA Northern Regional Management Information Systems (MIS) Senior Manager, Mr. Emmanuel Setorno, while Mr. Joseph Mensah MacLean served as scorer and Mr. Baba Faisal of the NHIA acted as timekeeper.
The regional competition was coordinated by an NHIA Head Office team comprising Senior Managers Hannatu Mustapha Adam and Abdul Karim Naatogmah, Manager Andriana Akyaa Afriyie, and Officer Samuel Larbi.
The NHIA Northern Regional Public Relations Manager, Awonnore Andrew Ayine, and his colleagues also supported the organising team.
The competition formed part of the NHIA’s efforts to promote health insurance literacy among students and deepen their understanding of the scheme and its services.
