The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are exploring opportunities to renew their relationship through research, technical collaboration and practical engineering training.
A delegation from KNUST visited TOR on Monday, October 26, 2026, to present and discuss a proposal aimed at leveraging the university’s research expertise and student projects to address technical challenges at the refinery.
The discussions focused on how selected operational and technical needs at TOR could be developed into research topics for undergraduate and postgraduate students, with the aim of generating practical solutions, ideas and technologies for the refinery.
The proposed collaboration also includes seminars and workshops at KNUST, where TOR engineers would share their industry experience with engineering students.
In addition, KNUST students could undertake educational visits to the refinery and access internship opportunities to gain firsthand experience of refinery operations and understand how engineering principles are applied in an industrial setting.
The Managing Director of TOR, Edmund Kombat, welcomed the presentation and indicated that KNUST is expected to submit a formal proposal for consideration.
He said the refinery will review the proposal before the two institutions engage further on possible next steps.
He noted that the proposed partnership is intended to strengthen links between academia and industry, promote practical research and provide students with opportunities to gain experience relevant to the energy and engineering sectors.
