The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is targeting November 2026 to appoint a substantive head coach for the Black Stars, Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has disclosed.
Speaking to Luv FM, Asante Twum said the five-member committee responsible for identifying a replacement for former coach Carlos Queiroz was working to complete the selection process by the end of November.
“They [the committee] want to get us a coach by November.
In terms of actuals, I don’t have [a specific date], but I know by the end of the two games against Somalia, they will be in a position to tell who our coach is,” he said.
Meanwhile, the GFA has appointed Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren on an interim basis to lead the senior national team in their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia.
Björkegren will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while Fatawu Dauda will continue as goalkeepers’ coach.
The interim technical team was recommended by the five-member committee overseeing the search for a permanent head coach.
Asante Twum said the immediate priority was to improve Ghana’s position in the qualifiers rather than focus on the ongoing coaching appointment process.
“The two games ahead of us are more important than any other subject.
We need to get back on track and must get results in the next matches,” he said.
The Black Stars are bottom of Group C without a point after losing their opening two matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.
Ghana will face Somalia in a two-legged qualifying fixture in November as the team seeks to revive its campaign and improve its chances of securing a place at the 2027 AFCON.
The pressure to turn around the team’s fortunes comes after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, finishing bottom of their qualifying group without recording a win.
The GFA’s planned appointment of a substantive coach is expected to provide clarity on the team’s long-term technical leadership as the Black Stars seek to recover from their recent qualifying setbacks.
