The Federation of Ghana Medical Students Associations (FGMSA) and affected graduating medical and dental students have sued the Medical and Dental Council (MDC), seeking to stop the conduct of the Common Registration Examination (CRE).
The legal action has been filed at the High Court of Justice, Human Rights Division, in Accra, with the applicants seeking an injunction to restrain the Council from conducting the examination pending the determination of the substantive legal issues before the court.
The case challenges the implementation of the Common Registration Examination, which has become the subject of a dispute between the Council and the affected students.
In a statement announcing the legal action, the Federation said the move followed unsuccessful attempts to resolve the concerns through engagement with the relevant authorities.
The statement said the action seeks to prevent the examination from proceeding while the court considers the legal issues raised by the applicants.
According to the Federation, the decision to pursue legal action came after efforts to address the concerns through discussions with the relevant authorities failed to produce a resolution.
The applicants are now seeking judicial intervention to restrain the MDC from conducting the CRE until the substantive issues in the case have been determined.
The outcome of the proceedings could determine whether the examination can proceed while the legal dispute remains unresolved.
However, the statement did not provide further details about the specific legal grounds being advanced by the applicants or indicate when the court is expected to hear the case.
The Federation has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of medical and dental students as the matter moves through the judicial process.
“FGMSA remains committed to protecting the interests of medical and dental students and will pursue the legal process to its conclusion,” the statement said.
It also assured students and other stakeholders that further information about the case would be communicated through its official channels.
“Further updates will be communicated through the Federation’s official channels,” it added.
The legal action places the implementation of the Common Registration Examination before the High Court, with the applicants seeking an injunction while their substantive concerns are considered.
The Medical and Dental Council’s response to the lawsuit was not included in the statement announcing the action.
