The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it will soon commence a nationwide meter audit exercise across all its operational areas to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue assurance and combat electricity theft.
The exercise will involve inspecting and verifying prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring to ensure accurate measurement and billing of electricity consumption.
In a public announcement, ECG said the exercise would cover all its operational areas, adding that the notice serves as official notification.
ECG has advised customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel not to deny or delay access to authorised staff simply because they have not received a separate notification letter.
The company cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which provides that, “A consumer shall grant the employee of a public utility or agent of a public utility, safe and reasonable access to the premises of the consumer, subject to the production of a verifiable identity card, to read a meter or to check a utility equipment, where that employee or agent follows the procedure for grant of access prescribed in the Customer Charter of the public utility.”
However, ECG has urged customers to verify the identities of field personnel before granting them access to their premises.
“All ECG employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise will carry official ECG identification cards,” the company said.
The company says the exercise is part of efforts to reduce commercial losses, strengthen revenue assurance and improve electricity service delivery.
