Ghana will exceed IMF’s upgraded 5.7% growth forecast – Ato Forson vows

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has expressed confidence that Ghana’s economy will grow beyond the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) revised projection of 5.7% for 2026.

The IMF upgraded its growth forecast for Ghana from 4.6% to 5.7% in its October 2026 World Economic Outlook, released during the ongoing IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.

Reacting to the revision in a post on X, Dr. Forson said the government was confident the economy would outperform the new projection.

“The IMF has upgraded Ghana’s 2026 growth forecast from 4.6% to 5.7%. We are confident we will exceed that projection. In Bangkok, I met with the IMF’s African Department Director, Zeine Zeidane, and reaffirmed our commitment to the fiscal credibility, discipline and bold reforms powering Ghana’s economic turnaround.”

The minister’s comments follow the upward revision of the country’s economic outlook by the Fund, representing an increase of 1.1 percentage points from its April forecast.

According to the IMF’s October outlook, Ghana’s economy is projected to expand by 5.7% in 2026, above the projected average of 4.5% for Sub-Saharan Africa. The Fund also projects Ghana’s inflation rate at 4.8% for the year.

The revised growth projection is also above the government’s 2026 growth target of 4.8%, according to reports on the IMF’s latest outlook.

The minister is leading Ghana’s delegation to the 2026 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, scheduled for October 12 to 18.

The engagements come ahead of the 2027 Budget, in which the government is expected to outline its next phase of economic development under its proposed New Economy agenda.

Ghana completed the final review of its 39-month Extended Credit Facility arrangement with the IMF in July 2026, allowing for a final disbursement of about US$371 million and bringing total disbursements under the programme to approximately US$3 billion.

While the revised forecast signals improved expectations for economic growth, Dr. Forson says the government is confident Ghana can perform beyond the IMF’s latest projection.
