The Ministry of Education has ordered steps to suspend the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, and requested a police investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the ministry said the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu had directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure the headmaster’s immediate suspension while investigations into the matter continue.
The decision follows an investigation by Manasseh Azure Awuni into allegations of sexual misconduct against a female student of the school in the Ashanti Region.
The ministry said the matter was being treated seriously and that the suspension was intended to remain in place pending full investigations.
“The Honourable Minister considers the issue serious and has directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service to take effective immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster, Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, pending full investigations into the matter.”
Beyond the administrative action, the minister has asked the Police Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters to commence investigations into the allegations.
“The Minister has also requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters to commence investigations into the matter.”
The ministry and the GES also reiterated their position on alleged misconduct in schools, stressing that educational institutions must protect students.
“The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service reiterate that we would not tolerate or countenance such alleged despicable misconduct in any educational institution across the country.”
The allegations come amid earlier unrest at the school in August 2026, when the headmaster was allegedly attacked by students during tensions on campus. The incident left him injured and resulted in damage to school property.
The Obuasi Circuit Court subsequently remanded three people in connection with the alleged attack and unlawful damage. They included Kwasi Brefo, Joseph Appiah Arthur and Desmond Owusu, who were accused of abetting the alleged assault and damage to property.
The minister has instructed the Ghana Education Service to take immediate steps to suspend headmaster Zakaria Abdulai pending full investigations and has requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters to investigate the matter.
