The police officer linked to the death of 23 years old Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo on the Tema Motorway has been arraigned and charged with murder.
General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng appeared before the Adabraka District Court in Accra on Tuesday, September 15, following his arrest in connection with the August 27 incident.
The prosecution alleges that Koranteng was pursuing a Yango motorbike carrying Baidoo and rider Samuel Wesley Arthur after Arthur allegedly failed to stop at a red light at the UPSA intersection.
The chase reportedly continued through Okponglo and the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange before reaching the Tema Motorway.
Prosecutors allege that Koranteng kicked the motorcycle after the Old Tollbooth, resulting in the rider losing control and crashing into a concrete barrier.
They also allege that the officer left without stopping to assist the victims or arranging emergency medical care.
Baidoo was later taken to the Tema General Hospital by members of the public but was pronounced dead on arrival. Arthur was treated and discharged.
The Homicide Unit of the CID took over the investigation on September 8, with Koranteng arrested four days later. The Police Professional Standards Bureau is also investigating the officer’s conduct.
The Police Service has assured the public that “the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigations.”
