Fuel price hikes do not justify transport fare increase – Commercial Operators warn

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have clarified that there has been no increase in public transport fares, despite ongoing discussions over a possible upward adjustment.

This follows reports that some drivers have started charging higher fares on certain routes, prompting concerns among commuters.

However, in a joint statement, the GPRTU and GRTCC said the existing approved fares remain in force while consultations with government continue.

The two transport groups said discussions on the 2026 fare review formally began on Tuesday, September 8, following a meeting with the Minister for Transport and his technical team in Accra.

The unions have proposed an upward review, citing prevailing economic conditions, efforts to stabilise the cedi and the operating costs faced by commercial transport operators.

The discussions also take into account the government’s GH¢2.00 per litre intervention on diesel, which has helped cushion operators and commuters.

The unions and government, however, agreed that the full impact of the fuel intervention on operating costs must be assessed before any decision is made on new fares.

“Both parties acknowledged the value of the fuel intervention and agreed that its full impact on operating costs, together with the proposal for fare increment, requires further engagement before any determination is made on the matter.”

A joint team from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU and GRTCC has subsequently been tasked to review all relevant cost inputs.

“The outcome of this exercise will be communicated to the general public in due course.”

The transport groups have therefore urged drivers, station masters and transport owners to maintain the current fares until an official decision is announced.

They also appealed to commuters and transport operators to remain calm and cooperate as the review process continues.
