A man in his 40s has been crushed to death by a pile of wood after the tricycle he was riding overturned at Assin Gangan in the Assin North District of the Central Region.
The deceased, identified as Ato, was returning from his farm on Thursday, September 3, when the incident occurred.
A community source said Ato, an information centre operator and farmer, was also the branch Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Assin North Constituency.
According to the source, Ato left home at about 8:00 a.m. to his farm to collect wood.
He loaded the wood onto a tricycle, popularly known as an aboboyaa, after removing its bucket to create additional space for the load.
However, while returning home, the overloaded tricycle reportedly lost its balance and overturned at a section of the road described by residents as being in a very deplorable condition.
The load of wood subsequently fell on Ato, killing him instantly.
The incident has left residents of Assin Gangan traumatised, with several people rushing into the bush to retrieve the body.
The accident has also drawn attention to the condition of the road, particularly the risks faced by residents who rely on tricycles to transport farm produce and other goods.
