The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber linked to a series of highway robberies along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The suspect, identified as Bube Gariba, was arrested at Akateng near Asesewa on September 1, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation conducted jointly by the Eastern Regional Police Command and the Eastern South Regional Command.
His arrest follows a series of reported highway robberies targeting commuters along the Nsawam-Suhum stretch and other parts of the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
Police said the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Department launched the operation after five recent robbery incidents were reported at Kwafokrom, Anoff-Nsawam-Adeiso, Apedwa, Adasawase-Ankaase and Enyiresi in the Eastern South Region.
Preliminary investigations and interrogation of Gariba allegedly linked him to three of the robberies near Anyinam.
Police said Gariba also confessed to receiving GH¢5,700 and GH¢1,500 from proceeds of the robberies.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly named Mohammadu, Ali and Abdulai as his accomplices. He also identified Osmanu, a resident of Accra, as the alleged gang leader.
Gariba further told investigators that Osmanu allegedly supplied the gang with two pump-action guns used to terrorise passengers during previous robberies.
One of the alleged accomplices, identified as Mohammad, escaped during the police operation after his wife allegedly alerted him and obstructed officers who were trying to arrest him.
Police subsequently arrested his wife, 22-year-old Karia Hawa Isha.
Nine other people were also arrested at the location and are being screened to determine their possible involvement in the highway robberies.
All the suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, the Police Service has launched a manhunt for the escaped suspect, Mohammadu, alleged gang leader Osmanu and other members of the suspected robbery syndicate.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it remains committed to tackling violent crime and improving security on major highways and in communities.
The Service is also urging anyone with information about the suspects or other criminal activities to provide it to the Eastern Regional Police Command.
