The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has appealed to Ghanaians to rekindle their taste for locally produced rice and make Ghanaian rice a major part of their meals this festive season.
Mr Dumelo made the appeal in a Facebook post as he encouraged individuals and corporate institutions to support local rice farmers and the domestic agricultural industry.
“Please let’s make this Christmas a ‘Made in Ghana’ Christmas with Ghanaian rice,” he said.
The Deputy Minister also announced a personal incentive for corporate institutions that purchase Ghanaian rice, promising to personally deliver the rice to companies that place orders.
His appeal forms part of efforts to encourage increased consumption of locally produced agricultural commodities and create a stronger market for Ghanaian farmers.
Mr Dumelo urged Ghanaians to use the Christmas season as an opportunity to support local producers by choosing Ghanaian rice over imported alternatives.
He said greater patronage of locally produced rice would help strengthen the domestic agricultural value chain while supporting farmers and other players in the sector.
