The Executive Secretary to President John Mahama, Dr Callistus Mahama, has urged young Ghanaians to explore opportunities in agriculture, particularly livestock farming, describing the sector as a potential source of employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.
His call follows a visit to the livestock farm of Mr Basintale, Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), where he said he was deeply impressed by the scale and operations of the facility.
Dr Mahama described the farm as one of the most remarkable livestock farms he had visited and said it deserved attention as a place of learning and inspiration for young people interested in agriculture.
According to Dr Mahama, agriculture holds enormous potential for Ghana’s youth, stressing that knowledge, dedication and sound management can enable farming to become a rewarding career and a viable business.
He noted that opportunities in the sector extend beyond animal husbandry to include veterinary services, feed production, processing, transportation and marketing.
He encouraged students in agricultural colleges and universities to visit the farm to gain practical exposure to livestock production and understand how classroom knowledge can be applied to running an agricultural enterprise.
Dr Mahama said such visits could help students develop practical skills, generate new ideas and build the confidence needed to establish their own businesses.
Dr Mahama also urged the Minister for Food and Agriculture to explore opportunities for structured educational visits, internships and practical training in collaboration with the farm’s management and relevant educational institutions.
He said connecting students and aspiring young farmers with operational farms could help bridge the gap between academic training and entrepreneurship.
He further stressed the need for Ghana to support young people entering agriculture with access to training, finance, land, technical advice and reliable markets.
According to him, empowering young farmers could strengthen food security, increase local production and create sustainable livelihoods in communities across the country.
Dr Mahama commended Mr Basintale and his team for their work and for demonstrating the opportunities available in livestock farming.
He expressed hope that the farm would inspire more young Ghanaians to view agriculture as a profession worthy of their ambition, talent and investment.
