Road restrictions along the Dr. Buzia Highway in the Kaneshie enclave will extend into 2027 as authorities implement phased traffic arrangements to facilitate the construction of a major underground drainage system.
Project Coordinator of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, Dr. Kojo Ohene Sarfo, disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 26.
He said the first phase of the traffic plan will begin on September 7, 2026, with the closure of the westbound carriageway from Pamprum Junction.
The initial phase is expected to end in November, after which Pamprum Junction will reopen in the first week of December.
However, the remaining westbound section from Kaneshie Station to First Light will remain closed until August 2027 to allow construction of the underground drain to continue.
Dr. Sarfo explained that the project will subsequently move into another phase around the First Light Junction.
“The works spanning the First Light Junction will constitute the third phase and kickstart the second phase of the traffic management arrangements,” he said.
Under the second phase of the traffic plan, expected to run from September to the end of October 2027, the road linking the First Light intersection on the westbound section to the Cocoa Clinic Roundabout will be closed.
The closures are part of the construction of a 1.5-kilometre underground stormwater drain designed to improve flood management in the Kaneshie enclave.
Dr. Sarfo said authorities would continue engaging the public throughout the project and provide advance information on subsequent traffic arrangements.
“The public will be informed well ahead of the arrangements in this phase through the same communication channels that are being launched today,” he said.
The GARID Project has also provided toll-free lines and other channels for motorists and residents to obtain information, submit complaints and raise concerns during the construction period.
