Twenty-five suspects are currently standing trial in connection with election-related violence recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections, the Minister for the Interior has disclosed.

The Minister made the disclosure during the Government Accountability Series, on Monday, August 24, while presenting an update on investigations into election-related violence and the progress made in prosecuting persons identified in the various cases.

According to him, a total of 26 suspects have so far been put before the courts, with one subsequently discharged.

“Since the submission of the last report, further progress has been made in the investigations. Across all the cases investigated so far, a total of twenty-six (26) suspects have been put before the courts. One has since been discharged, while twenty-five (25) are currently standing trial,” he said.

The cases form part of investigations initiated after President John Dramani Mahama, on January 10, 2025, directed a thorough and impartial investigation into all incidents of election-related violence recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

The Minister said the directive was followed by the constitution of a Special Investigation Task Force under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

“Subsequent to that directive, the Inspector-General of Police constituted a Special Investigation Task Force under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to undertake the investigations and give effect to the President’s directive,” he said.

He explained that the latest update builds on an earlier report presented in November 2025, with investigations continuing into cases across several constituencies.

Among the cases under investigation is the Banda Constituency case, where Silas Wulochamey was stabbed to death on July 13, 2020, following confrontations between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during a voter registration exercise.

Police investigations have led to the identification and arrest of several suspects, including Joe Danquah, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the 2020 General Elections, who allegedly led a mob attack, and Gabriel Yaw Agyei alias Abodie, who is suspected of stabbing the deceased.

Agyei was arraigned before the Adabraka District Court on March 11, 2026, on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder. He was subsequently granted bail by the Accra High Court, with the next hearing scheduled for August 31, 2026.

The Offinso North case has also recorded progress, with six suspects arrested over the lynching of Jacob Nlor following confrontations between NPP and NDC supporters at Nkramon, Akomadan, on December 9, 2024.

All six suspects have been put before the court, with the latest two — James Kwadwo Owusu alias Kojos and Kwame Adutwum alias Hardman — arrested in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, the Police are pursuing a number of suspects who remain at large.

The Minister said, “The Police will continue to pursue all outstanding suspects and support the prosecution of those already before the courts.”

He added, “The public will be duly informed of further developments as the investigations and prosecutions progress.”

The update covers cases involving deaths, shootings, clashes and other forms of election-related violence recorded during the 2020 and 2024 elections, with investigations and prosecutions continuing in several constituencies.
