Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to treating criminal acts strictly according to the law, regardless of the religious background of those involved.

His comments came during a meeting with Christian and Muslim religious leaders in Accra, where he stressed the need to preserve Ghana’s tradition of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

The Minister said the Ministry of the Interior and the country’s security agencies would remain neutral in dealing with criminal matters and would not allow religion to influence the application of the law.

“Crime will be treated as crime and we will deal with perpetrators in accordance with the law, without fear or favour, to ensure that no one uses religion to undermine our peace.”

Muntaka also commended the Inspector General of Police, the National Chief Imam and Christian leaders for their swift response in helping to calm tensions following a recent altercation involving a pastor and an imam.

“We saw leadership in action. The way our religious leaders and the Police Service handled the matter shows the level of understanding and tolerance that defines us as Ghanaians. That is what we must continue to protect,” he stated.

According to the Interior Minister, the engagement was also intended to thank the religious leaders for their intervention and seek their views on strengthening cooperation and religious tolerance.

“Our diversity is our strength. Let us guard it jealously so that Ghana remains a beacon of peace in the region,” he added.

The meeting follows concerns raised over the recent altercation, which sparked discussions about religious tolerance and the need to protect Ghana’s longstanding culture of peaceful coexistence.
