Ato Forson: Gov’t determined to end Ghana’s reliance on IMF bailouts

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says the government is committed to ensuring that Ghana does not return to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for another bailout.

Dr Forson said Ghana’s repeated reliance on IMF programmes over the years demonstrates the need for stronger fiscal discipline and sustainable economic management.

Speaking on the country’s ongoing economic recovery, the Finance Minister said the government was implementing a series of reforms aimed at addressing the underlying weaknesses that have repeatedly pushed Ghana into economic distress.

He stressed that the objective was to build a resilient economy capable of financing the country’s development without recurring dependence on external financial assistance.

According to Dr Forson, Ghana’s history of seeking support from the IMF must serve as a lesson for policymakers and strengthen the commitment to responsible management of public finances.

He said the current IMF programme should mark a turning point in Ghana’s economic management and bring an end to a cycle that has seen the country turn to the Fund for support on 17 occasions.

The Finance Minister said the government would continue to pursue policies designed to maintain macroeconomic stability, strengthen public finances and prevent a recurrence of the economic challenges that have necessitated previous IMF interventions.

He expressed confidence that sustained fiscal discipline and the implementation of structural reforms would help Ghana achieve long-term economic stability and reduce its vulnerability to external shocks.
