The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has completed the initial phase of repair works on the Ashaiman section of the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line, with the remaining tower replacement work scheduled for Sunday, August 23, 2026.
GRIDCo said its engineers carried out the preliminary repair works on Sunday, August 16, following an earlier incident that affected one of the transmission towers on the line.
According to the company, power has since been restored to customers following the completion of the initial phase.
In a statement, GRIDCo said the next phase would involve the replacement of the affected transmission tower.
“The remaining phase of the work, which involves the replacement of the affected transmission tower following a welding explosion in July, will be undertaken on Sunday, 23 August 2026,” the company said.
GRIDCo explained that it would work with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to notify customers and communities that could be affected by the planned works.
The company said prior information would be provided to affected areas, including details of any associated interruptions to power supply.
“Power has since been restored to customers, and GRIDCo appreciates the public’s cooperation and understanding,” the statement added.
The repair exercise follows damage to a transmission tower on the Ashaiman section of the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line after a welding explosion in July.
The transmission line forms part of Ghana’s electricity transmission network, and work on the affected tower is intended to restore the full integrity and reliability of the infrastructure.
GRIDCo said the initial works were undertaken as part of a progressive process to address the damage and complete the tower replacement.
The company assured the public that it would continue working to complete the project and strengthen the resilience of the transmission line.
The company also appealed to customers and communities to cooperate with the authorities during the next phase of the works, particularly if temporary power interruptions become necessary.
