SONABEL, operators of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, has postponed the commencement of controlled water spillage from the dam.
The Water Resources Commission (WRC), in an update issued on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, said the decision follows continued monitoring of the reservoir level.
“As of Tuesday August 11, 2026, the reservoir water level of the Bagré Dam is at 233.08 metres, with a filling rate of 75.40%. The reservoir level is currently 1.92 metres below the normal reservoir level of 235.00 metres,” the Commission stated.
SONABEL is expected to commence the controlled spillage when the reservoir level reaches 234.50 metres.
The WRC said it is monitoring the situation and will update stakeholders and the public on the date and time of the spillage.
The postponement follows an earlier alert issued by the Commission on August 4 regarding the planned controlled release of water from the dam.
The annual spillage can increase water levels in the White Volta and raise the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities in northern Ghana, particularly when combined with heavy rainfall.
The Commission has therefore urged stakeholders to remain alert while it continues to monitor developments.
