Ghana gov’t-sponsored PhD students in UK demand video footage after alleged assault at High Commission

Eecutives of Ghanaian government-sponsored PhD students in the United Kingdom have given the Ghana High Commission in London a one-week ultimatum to release full CCTV or video footage relating to an alleged assault on one of their colleagues during a protest over delayed scholarship payments.

The students are also threatening to escalate the matter to UK authorities, including Citizens Advice and the Ombudsman, as well as seek police investigations if their demand is not met.

The incident is said to have occurred on June 16, 2026, during a peaceful demonstration staged by sponsored students over prolonged delays in the payment of tuition fees and stipends under the Ghana Scholarship Authority (GSA).

In a statement issued on Friday, June 19, the group alleged that one of their members, Abena Fosua Gyasi, sustained multiple soft tissue injuries following what they described as a verbal and physical altercation involving a staff member of the High Commission identified as Bridget Bonney, along with others.

According to the statement, Ms. Gyasi has received medical treatment and is expected to recover within two weeks after medical examination.

The executives said the protest was a static demonstration at the High Commission when the alleged incident occurred.

They further announced the reactivation of suspended protest actions and indicated plans to stage a week-long demonstration in London from July 2 to July 9, 2026, to demand payment of outstanding tuition fees and stipends owed to Ghanaian-sponsored students.

The group also disclosed intentions to engage international media organisations, including the BBC, to draw wider attention to the matter, while calling for the personal intervention of President John Dramani Mahama.

“We call on President John Dramani Mahama to take a personal interest in this issue to ensure speedy justice and resolution,” the statement said, urging students to remain calm as they pursue redress.

The Ghana High Commission in London has yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
