After more than three decades of observing Ghana’s public life from different vantage points — as a media practitioner, legislator, lecturer, member of the National Media Commission, and at one point National Communications Officer of the NDC — I have learned one enduring truth: the moment a political party confuses the pursuit of power with the purpose of leadership, it begins to lose its way.
Power is not the destination.
It is only the instrument.
The deeper question is what that power is intended to achieve for the people.
That is why the conversation about the NDC after John Mahama must not begin with personalities.
It must begin with the kind of leadership Ghana will require in its next phase of development.
Leadership, in the context of the National Democratic Congress, has never been a matter of mere succession.
It is about the delicate balance between continuity and renewal, about the ability to hold together a broad coalition while responding to the evolving aspirations of Ghanaians.
As John Mahama continues his current term, the party must already look beyond him — not with haste, but with sober reflection on the kind of leadership that will best serve both the NDC and Ghana in the years ahead.
Continuity without Imitation
John Mahama’s presidency will leave behind both achievements and unfinished business.
The next leader cannot approach the future as if everything before them was wrong. But neither should the future be imprisoned by the past.
A successor who merely imitates Mahama’s rhetoric or style will struggle to convince Ghanaians that a new chapter has begun.
One who rejects Mahama outright risks alienating the very tradition that delivered victory in 2024.
The wiser path is this: preserve what works, correct what does not, and renew what must change.
That is the difference between succession and succession planning.
Economic Competence Is Non-Negotiable
Ghanaian politics is judged, above all, by the economy. Jobs.
The cost of living. Public finances. Investment. Productivity. Industrialisation.
The future of young people.
These are not abstract policy questions. They are everyday realities in homes and workplaces.
The next flagbearer must therefore be more than a skilled communicator.
They must be someone who understands economic policy, can translate it into implementation, and explain difficult choices honestly. Charisma matters.
Organisation matters. But none of these can permanently compensate for weak economic grounding.
National Leadership Must Be Truly National
A leader cannot simply be nationally known; they must be national in outlook.
That means listening across regions, generations, professions, and social groups.
It means recognising that Accra is not Ghana, that the aspirations of youth differ from those of older generations, and that the concerns of a farmer may not be the same as those of an entrepreneur.
National leadership requires social breadth — the ability to make even those who did not initially support you feel part of the national conversation.
Institutions Over Personality
Personalities come and go. Institutions remain.
The next leader must respect constitutional processes even when inconvenient, build systems rather than rely on personal loyalty, and strengthen organisations without making themselves indispensable to them.
A country is governed well not because a leader is powerful, but because institutions remain credible and accountable even when leaders change.
The Ability to Unite After Competition
Ambition is natural in politics.
The challenge is what happens after the contest. Can those who lose accept the outcome?
Can those who win make room for those who contested them?
Can competitors return to a common purpose once the votes are counted?
The next flagbearer must demonstrate not only the ability to mobilise before a contest, but the maturity to reconcile after it.
Engaging the Youth Without Patronising Them
Age alone is not the issue.
The deeper question is whether the leader understands the changing aspirations of younger Ghanaians — unemployment, digital culture, migration, new forms of enterprise, artificial intelligence, and shifting expectations about authority.
A leader does not have to be young to understand this generation, but they must be willing to listen without lecturing.
Campaigning Is Not Governing
A compelling speech can win applause.
A campaign can build enthusiasm.
But governance requires something else entirely: Policy → Budget → Institution → Implementation → Monitoring → Results.
Executive experience, administrative competence, and the ability to manage institutions must therefore weigh heavily in evaluating future leadership.
Integrity and Restraint
Public life rewards visibility, but constant visibility is not always leadership. Sometimes the most credible leader is the one who knows when to speak, when to listen, when to negotiate, and when to allow institutions to do their work.
Ethical credibility is accumulated slowly and lost quickly.
A reputation for fairness, honesty, accountability, and respect for others may not produce immediate excitement, but it can become one of a leader’s greatest assets.
The Real Test
The NDC’s future should not be reduced to succession by personality. It should be about succession by vision, competence, character, and capacity to serve.
The deeper questions are these:
• Can this person unite the party after competition?
• Can this person manage a difficult economy?
• Can this person respect institutions?
• Can this person turn ideas into results?
• Can this person speak to the whole country?
• Can this person engage the young without patronising them?
• Can this person combine experience with renewal?
• Can this person exercise power without being consumed by it?
And most importantly: Can this person make the NDC’s next chapter larger than the personality of the person who leads it?
That, ultimately, is the leadership test.
