FDA, Fisheries Commission investigate fish mortality in Tema Shipyard

A joint team of state institutions has launched investigations into a mass fish mortality incident reported at the Tema Shipyard in the Greater Accra Region.

In a joint statement issued on April 9, 2026, the Food and Drugs Authority, Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, and the Criminal Investigations Department said the situation was first detected on April 6.

“The four institutions listed above jointly responded immediately and secured the site. The cause of the incident is currently under urgent investigation,” the statement said.

Authorities indicated that the dead fish were found within a limited area around the shipyard.

“Dead fishes were found concentrated within a 50-metre radius of the main unloading ramp,” the statement noted, adding that the situation was first observed by security personnel between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

A rapid-response team made up of inspectors and security officials has since been working to determine the cause of the incident, with samples already taken for testing.

“Between 60 and 80 fish samples, and some water samples have been collected under chain-of-custody protocols for priority laboratory testing,” the statement added.

While investigations continue, authorities say there is currently no indication of foul play or a widespread health emergency.

“There is no evidence so far of deliberate sabotage or an immediate widespread health emergency,” the agencies stated.

The public has been advised to avoid any fish from the affected area until further notice.

“Do NOT harvest, purchase, or consume fish or seafood from the Tema Shipyard or adjacent areas until the FDA issues an ‘All-Clear’ notice,” the statement cautioned.

Officials also urged anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming fish from the area to seek immediate medical attention.

The agencies say further updates will be provided as investigations progress, urging the public to rely only on verified sources for information.
