A staunch member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Umar Sanda Mohammed, has been expelled from the party for choosing to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election.
According to the party in a statement signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey on February 17, 2026, Mr. Sanda’s decision to break ranks directly violates the NDC Constitution and undermines the party’s collective decision to support its officially endorsed candidate.
“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter read.
The NDC also emphasized that Umar Sanda is strictly prohibited from using any of the party’s symbols, including its name, logo, colors, or insignia, in his campaign or any related political activity.
The Ayawaso East by-election, scheduled for March 3, 2026, follows the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026. The Electoral Commission has cleared five candidates to contest the seat.
