Air travel between Ghana and Canada is set for a major shift as Air Transat announces its first direct, non-stop route connecting Toronto to Accra — a milestone expected to strengthen economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
The service, announced by Air Transat and the High Commission of Canada in Ghana, will operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays, from June 17 to October 22, 2026. It will be the first direct air link between Canada and Ghana.
The launch follows the Air Transport Agreement (ATA) signed between Ghana and Canada in March 2025. The agreement created a framework for expanded aviation cooperation, allowing up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly cargo flights by multiple carriers, paving the way for improved connectivity that supports trade, tourism and investment.
“This announcement marks a historic milestone in Canada-Ghana relations. The new route, made possible by our recent Air Transport Agreement (ATA), opens a new chapter in our partnership – one that will deepen cooperation, expand opportunities for business and cultural exchanges, and strengthen the people-to-people connections that anchor our shared future,” said Myriam Montrat, High Commissioner of Canada in Ghana.
The introduction of the route comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada is co-hosting with the United States and Mexico. Officials say the new link will make travel more convenient for fans, tourists and business travellers from both nations.
Air Transat says the route responds to growing demand among the Ghanaian diaspora in Ontario and Canadians increasingly interested in traveling to Ghana.
Officials encourage both Ghanaian and Canadian communities to take full advantage of the new route, noting that its benefits extend beyond convenience to include expanded trade, cultural exchange, investment opportunities and stronger diplomatic ties.
