Newly sworn-in Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, has pledged to work with staff to advance Ghana’s development while ensuring that science, technology and innovation do not harm the environment.
She said the ministry has an important role to play in finding a balance between technological progress and environmental protection.
Dr. Agyemang-Rawlings made the remarks when she officially engaged the ministry’s leadership and staff after assuming office.
“Science, technology and innovation are meant to work hand-in-hand as we look towards our development. It must not be at the expense of our environment.”
She stressed that protecting Ghana’s environment is a shared responsibility between the government and citizens.
“Our Constitution which is the supreme law of the land is clear about the fact that both government and citizens have a responsibility to protect our environment.”
According to the minister, collaboration will be central to the ministry’s work. She called on staff to work together to achieve its mandate and also help educate the public about their responsibility to protect the environment.
She noted that Ghana, like other countries, is facing serious environmental challenges linked to climate change and human activity.
“The issues of climate change, the issues of degradation of the environment as a result of human activity have never been so grave.”
Dr. Agyemang-Rawlings also acknowledged the circumstances surrounding her appointment following the death of the previous minister.
“Today is a day that is one with slightly mixed feelings because we’ve had a vacancy created here as a result of the unfortunate demise of a friend of ours who was a colleague as well who was the minister prior to my coming here.”
She said the new chapter also presents an opportunity for the ministry to strengthen teamwork and deliver on its core mandate.
“I am here to work with you. We are working as a team.”
Although she acknowledged her position as head of the ministry, Dr. Agyemang-Rawlings said success would depend on cooperation across all levels.
“Yes indeed, I am the head of the institution but our success will depend on how we work together, cooperate, collaborate.”
She further assured staff that her leadership would not be based on favouritism.
“Please be assured of the fact that I’m not here to pick favorites. My job here is to make sure that we work together, that we achieve our objectives.”
The minister also set expectations for discipline, transparency and accountability, particularly in the management of public funds.
“What I would have an expectation of is a minimum standard of discipline, of transparency and accountability and of prudence when it comes to handling of resources that are actually the taxpayers contribution towards this country’s development.”
Dr. Agyemang-Rawlings expressed appreciation to the Chief Director, directors, deputy directors and other staff for their support and said she looked forward to working with them.
