Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has assured Ghanaians that public funds are safe under his stewardship, pledging to protect the country’s resources and manage them in the national interest for as long as he remains in office.

Dr Forson gave the assurance while concluding his presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23.

“My assurance to this House and to every Ghanaian is simple: your money is safe,” he told Parliament.

“Under the leadership of President Mahama, your economy is in safe hands. And as long as I have the honour to serve as Minister for Finance, it will remain so,” he added.

According to the Finance Minister, public funds belong to Ghanaians and those entrusted with managing them have a responsibility to ensure they are used prudently and transparently.

“The money we manage does not belong to those entrusted to manage it. It belongs to the people of Ghana – it belongs to you!” Dr Forson stated.

“Every cedi collected in taxes, every cedi borrowed and every cedi spent carries with it a sacred obligation to use it wisely, honestly and always in the national interest,” he added.

Dr Forson said prudent management of public resources, rather than the amount of money spent by a government, should be the benchmark for assessing the performance of a Finance Minister.

“Mr. Speaker, the true measure of a Finance Minister is not how much he spends, but how faithfully he protects the resources entrusted to him,” he said.

He also pledged that the government would be transparent with Ghanaians about the state of the economy and public finances, including when the country encounters difficulties.

Dr Forson said maintaining economic stability would require continued fiscal discipline, accountability and prudent management of the gains made so far.

“Economic stability is not an event. It is a duty renewed every day through prudent stewardship, fiscal discipline and unwavering accountability,” he stated.

His comments came as the government used the Mid-Year Budget Review to assess the performance of the economy and implementation of the 2026 Budget, while outlining its fiscal and economic priorities for the remainder of the year.

The government has maintained that Ghana has moved beyond the immediate phase of economic stabilisation and is now seeking to consolidate the gains while pursuing growth, job creation and economic transformation.

Dr Forson ended his presentation with a declaration that the country would not return to its recent economic difficulties.

“Ghana is not going back!” he declared.

“Under the leadership of President Mahama, and with the determination of the Ghanaian people, Ghana is moving forward, steadily, honestly and together.”
