Hannah Sarpong, wife of the late National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Sarpong, has poured out her grief in a moving tribute, saying she is still waiting for her husband who promised to return from his last journey.
Delivering her message at the interdenominational state funeral on Friday, August 15, Mrs. Sarpong recalled her husband’s final words before leaving on what he described as “a return journey.”
With tears, she said: “I am still looking forward to welcoming you back home, my dear husband.”
Mr. Sarpong was among eight who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region. The tragedy also claimed Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed (Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation), former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed (Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator), and crew members Wing Commander Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Lieutenant Manaen Twum-Ampadu, and Flight Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Paying tribute, Mrs. Sarpong described her husband as more than a public servant — a man of strength, wisdom, and compassion who devoted himself to both family and country.
She recounted their 37 years of marriage filled with love, prayer, and shared dreams, saying his absence has left “a deep wound” in her heart.
“You said you were going to return. It was a return journey. I’m still waiting for you, my dear husband. The news of your departure continues to cut through my head. Do you hear my call? Come back,” she cried.
She described him as a man whose presence brought hope, peace, and joy to their home and whose footsteps symbolized protection for his family.
“You ran a good race, my husband. May the doors of heaven open until we meet again. Rest well, my lovely husband,” she concluded.
