Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed confidence that President John Dramani Mahama is well-positioned to assume the role of African Union (AU) Chairperson in 2027.
He emphasized that Mahama’s extensive experience and proven leadership make him a strong candidate to steer Africa’s agenda for unity and development.
Although President Mahama has confirmed he will not pursue a third term in Ghana, Ablakwa noted that his remaining three years in office provide a window to expand his influence at the continental level.
Mahama brings a wealth of regional experience, having served as ECOWAS Chairman from March 2014 to May 2015.
During this tenure, he coordinated West Africa’s response to the Ebola outbreak and mediated political crises in Burkina Faso and Mali, earning a reputation as a consensus-builder.
Ablakwa further highlighted Mahama’s collaboration with the AU on peace and security initiatives, as well as his support for AU and UN peacekeeping missions.
His focus on regional integration and infrastructure aligns with the AU’s Agenda 2063, which envisions a prosperous and united Africa.
The AU Chairpersonship rotates annually among Africa’s five regions, with the sitting Head of State representing the Union for a one-year term.
Analysts believe Mahama’s renewed mandate and previous regional leadership experience make him a strong contender when West Africa’s turn arrives.
