The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), in collaboration with the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), has declared an indefinite nationwide strike, effective Wednesday, May 21.
The industrial action follows what the unions describe as the government’s persistent failure to honour a six-month-old agreement aimed at improving their conditions of service.
The strike is being undertaken with “deep regret but unwavering resolve,” according to the leadership of the associations.
Addressing the press in Accra, George Ansong, the National Chairman of SSA-UoG, said the decision was taken after exhausting all avenues of dialogue.
He noted that despite repeated reminders and the granting of extended timelines, the government has failed to fulfill its commitments.
“The Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUWAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) announce, with deep regret but unwavering resolve, our decision to embark on an indefinite strike action,” Mr Ansong stated.
He added that, “This difficult decision comes after countless engagement and goodwill efforts extended to the government which have unfortunately been met with persistent inaction, neglect and blatant failure to honour the terms of our duly signed agreement six months ago. The government has continuously reneged on its commitment, thereby undermining the trust and cooperation that should exist between both parties.”
The leadership has instructed all members of the associations to stay home until further notice, stressing that the strike will continue indefinitely unless their demands are met.
