United Nigeria Airlines has named one of its aircraft “J.J. Rawlings” in honour of Ghana’s late former President.
The plane made its maiden flight from Abuja to Accra on Monday, November 10, 2025, marking the airline’s first commercial trip to Ghana.
At a brief ceremony at Kotoka International Airport, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, praised the gesture as a symbol of Rawlings’ enduring influence across Africa.
“President Rawlings lives in the hearts of men — this naming proves that the legend truly lives on,” he said.
Representing the Rawlings family, former Minister Fritz Baffour thanked the airline, calling the honour “a lasting tribute” and a testament to Ghana-Nigeria friendship.
United Nigeria Airlines CEO, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, who led the delegation, said the tribute was inspired by Rawlings’ legacy as an Air Force pilot and leader.
He also requested a minute’s silence for the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, and pledged the airline’s commitment to strengthening regional aviation ties.
