Former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has initiated legal proceedings at the High Court in Accra, seeking to halt the vetting and appointment of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.
The suit, filed through her lawyers, dated Thursday, October 16 challenges the legality of the processes that led to her removal and calls for the nullification of all actions taken by the Article 146 Committee, chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang.
Justice Torkornoo is asking the court to quash the committee’s findings, which formed the basis for her dismissal, and to declare the Presidential Warrant removing her from office as unconstitutional and void.
In her application, she also seeks an order prohibiting the consideration of a new Chief Justice until her case is determined, as well as the restoration of her salaries and benefits withheld following her removal.
Her suit comes as Parliament prepares to vet Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 2025 and was nominated by President John Mahama in September for the substantive role.
Justice Torkornoo was dismissed on September 1, 2025, after a committee established under Article 146 of the Constitution found her guilty of misconduct and breaches of public trust.
The former Chief Justice, however, maintains that the process was flawed and politically tainted.
