The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike effective Friday, September 19, 2025, plunging the education sector into fresh uncertainty.
In a statement dated Tuesday September 16, the union accused government and employer institutions of persistently neglecting the welfare of non-teaching staff, despite repeated engagements and adherence to due process.
TEWU explained that years of delayed negotiations, unfulfilled agreements, and unresolved promotion grievances have left its members frustrated, forcing the union to take this drastic step.
It stressed that the government’s failure to conclude and sign conditions of service agreements for non-teaching staff across public and technical universities, the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board had become untenable.
The union also faulted the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) for what it described as needless delays, urging it to expedite action without further excuses.
It warned that attempts to intimidate or prevent members from joining the strike would be considered unfair labour practices.
According to TEWU, the strike is the inevitable outcome of years of neglect, and the responsibility for any disruption in the education sector rests solely with the government.
