Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has temporarily shut down the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant due to unresolved contractual issues and the urgent need for critical maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operations.
In a statement, the company explained that the decision followed extensive technical assessments and consultations with key stakeholders.
The desalination facility, which serves thousands of residents in Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, Sakumono, La, and surrounding coastal communities, has been a key source of potable water since its establishment.
The shutdown, however, is expected to cause temporary supply disruptions in these areas.
To cushion affected consumers, GWL said alternative arrangements have been activated.
“We have begun rerouting water from other treatment plants and prioritising essential facilities such as hospitals, schools, and health centres,” the company added.
Chief Manager for Public Relations and Communications, Mr. Stanley Martey, expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured the public of ongoing efforts to restore normal operations.
“We sincerely apologise to our cherished customers for any disruption this may cause. We are working around the clock to resolve the issues and restore full operations as soon as possible,” he said.
Mr. Martey also reaffirmed GWL’s commitment to transparency, promising regular updates through the company’s official website, social media pages, and community engagement channels.
“The management of GWL remains committed to delivering safe, reliable, and continuous water supply services to our cherished customers,” the statement concluded.
