The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana decry alleged harassment and unlawful seizure of equipment belonging to its members in mining communities by the government.
In a statement on Tuesday, June 24, the Association said recent operations by the government’s anti-galamsey taskforce have led to the unwarranted confiscation and destruction of excavators and other mining equipment, many of which, they claimed, belong to licensed operators.
The group decried alleged trends of targeting small-scale miners, many of whom are operating within the law.
They highlighted the significant role small-scale mining plays in Ghana’s economy, asserting that the sector produced over 150 tonnes of gold in 2024 alone, with expectations of an increase in 2025.
“The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Ghana, expresses deep concern over recent developments affecting our members across various mining communities in the country. We wish to draw public attention to what we believe is a systematic targeting of our members following the assumption of office by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2025.”
“We have credible reports that the government’s anti-galamsey taskforce has been engaged in unlawful activities, including the unwarranted seizure and destruction of excavators belonging to our members many of whom operates within the legal framework. In several instances, equipment has been forcibly taken from miners’ homes, where they were not in use, raising serious questions about the legitimacy of these actions.”
According to the group, the current strategy reflects the ineffective anti-galamsey measures of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, explaining that harassment and the destruction of legally obtained equipment will not address the menace.
The Association called on the government to engage with stakeholders in a meaningful way and to honour its commitment to supporting small-scale miners, who are a crucial part of Ghana’s economic development.
