The Ministry of Roads and Highways has ordered the immediate removal of unauthorized billboards erected at the Flowerpot Interchange in Accra.
In a directive issued on Wednesday, August 21, the Ministry expressed concern over the growing trend of indiscriminate billboards, describing it as illegal and contrary to national regulations.
The statement, signed by Nasir Ahmad Yartey, Head of Public Relations at the Ministry, noted that the installation of an unapproved billboard at the interchange not only breaches the Ghana Standards Authority’s “Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs” (GS 847:2019) but also contravenes provisions in Act 540 and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).
The Ministry also referenced a disclaimer issued by the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), which distanced itself from the billboard and cautioned against the unauthorized use of its logo.
As part of the directive, the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly has been instructed to work with the Department of Urban Roads to ensure the billboards are dismantled without delay. The Ministry further urged all assemblies to consult relevant road agencies before granting permits for outdoor advertising.
In addition, the Advertising Association of Ghana was called upon to strictly enforce its code of conduct to prevent the indiscriminate erection of structures along road corridors.
According to the Ministry, such actions undermine road safety and damage infrastructure, stressing its commitment to protecting the country’s highways for the safety of the public.
